High Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid): The Chlorine Trap That Makes It Seem Like Your Chlorine “No Longer Works”

Your test shows a good chlorine level, but the water is still cloudy or starting to turn green with algae? The culprit is often an excessively high stabilizer level, also known as cyanuric acid. Here is how to recognize it, why it builds up, and how to bring it back to a healthy level — without wasting products that will never solve the real problem.

 

What is stabilizer, and why do you need it?

 

Stabilizer — also called cyanuric acid, CYA, or conditioner — acts like “sunscreen” for your chlorine. Without it, the sun’s UV rays can destroy the free chlorine in your pool within an hour or two. With the proper level, your chlorine lasts much longer, which reduces product consumption and helps maintain steady disinfection throughout the day.

 

The ideal target for a chlorine pool is between 30 and 50 ppm. For a saltwater pool, many manufacturers tolerate levels up to 60–80 ppm. Above 100 ppm, it becomes problematic.

 

Why too much stabilizer “locks” your chlorine

 

This is the well-known overstabilization effect, sometimes called “chlorine lock.” The higher the stabilizer level rises, the more free chlorine is required to achieve the same disinfecting power. In practical terms: your test strip may show 2 or 3 ppm of chlorine, but at 120 ppm of stabilizer, most of that chlorine is “asleep.” The result: cloudy water, algae growth, and swimmers who are not properly protected, even though the test seems to look fine.

 

The golden rule used by experts is that your free chlorine should be approximately 7.5% of your stabilizer level. At 100 ppm of CYA, you would therefore need to maintain nearly 7.5 ppm of free chlorine at all times — which is unrealistic and expensive. That is why the goal is to keep stabilizer levels low.

Why it builds up without you realizing it

Stabilizer does not evaporate and barely breaks down. It stays in the water, season after season. The most common trap is chlorine pucks and tablets, known as trichlor, as well as some shock treatments, known as dichlor, which already contain stabilizer. Every tablet you add contributes a little more. After a few summers, the level slowly climbs until it exceeds 100 ppm — often without the pool owner ever intentionally adding stabilizer.

 

How to know where you stand

 

Test your stabilizer at least once a month with a test strip that measures CYA, or bring a water sample to the store for a complete analysis. The only truly reliable way to lower it: dilution

 

There is no simple, reliable chemical product that can “erase” stabilizer. Reducers sold on the market produce inconsistent results. The proven method remains dilution: partially drain the pool and refill it with fresh water.

 

The calculation is proportional. To reduce your stabilizer by half, for example from 120 to 60 ppm, you need to replace approximately 50% of the water volume. For a more moderate reduction, a partial drain of 25–30% is often enough. Do this in cooler weather and follow your municipality’s drainage rules.

 

How to prevent it from coming back

 

- Alternate your chlorine sources. Use unstabilized chlorine, such as calcium hypochlorite or liquid chlorine, or a salt system for your regular needs, and reserve trichlor tablets for occasional situations.

- Test the stabilizer level once a month instead of only once at the beginning of the season.

- Never overdose stabilizer at opening. One addition at the beginning of the season is usually enough.

- In a spa, avoid stabilizer. The small water volume and heat amplify the problems: use bromine or chlorine without CYA instead.
